Description

CHETNOLE ST 6007 VILLAGE STREET (East side) 7/22 The Grange 11-7-51 - II* Villa-type house. Early C19. Hamstone ashlar front wall, side walls plastered, rear wall brick. Low-pitched hipped slate roof with deeply overhanging bracketed eaves. Plastered stacks near centre. Double-pile plan. 2 storeys and attics. Raised panelled double door with semi-circular fanlight, in open portico with Roman Doric columns and flat entablature. Ground floor has 2 simplified Venetian-type windows, set in round-headed recesses of 2 orders. First floor has 3 sashes with glazing bars under gauged arches. Shallow pilasters near ends of facade, and flanking the portico. Plat band at first floor cill level. C19 canted bay window in right side wall. Lower service block at rear, with plastered walls and hipped slate roof. Internally, main stair of stone, cantilevered around an open well, with ornamental iron balusters. Some contemporary marble fireplace surrounds, and joinery - panelled doors and window shutters with planted mouldings. Good Regency House. (RCHM Monument 9. (Dorset.
