Monument and landmark. 1844, restored in 1908, by Arthur Acland-Troyte Esq., in memory of Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, who died in 1839. Contractor: Henry Goddard of Bridport. Portesham ashlar. Octagonal tower c 70 ft. high, with battered base, heavy cornice and parapet, containing a spiral staircase lit through small slits. (RCHI4 Dorset II, p 242 (3). Hutchins II, p 760.
