Catholic Church, incorporating former barn-chapel. C18 (barn) and church completed 1874. Barn at right angles to C19 church and forming the 'transepts' of the later structure. Basilican plan with narthex. Coursed lias stone walls. Slate roof with stone gable copings. Narthex: triple arch (2 outer blind with lancets), with continuous hood-mould over, carried on responds with capitals. Stone cill interrupted by central doorway. West gable with large terracotta roundel, painted. Virgin of the Apocalypse at centre, small roundels with scenes from Christ's Passion. Latin inscription recording the rebuilding by Charles Weld and date 1874. Nave with north and south aisles, 5 bay nave. 5 cinquefoil windows. Clerestorey lights in threes, round-arched with responds and capitals. Crossing-Tower, octagonal with sexfoil roundels in diagonals. Mansard roof over with cross at apex and heavy cornice below.
C18 Barn con- stitutes present north and south transepts. Lias walls with gabled slate roof and stone gable coping. 5 brick arches, with keys, 2 blocked, rest windows. East gable wall with 3 niches and decorative tile work under the coping. Interior: Narthex, round-arch entrance to church, 2-leaf wood door. Inscription from Habakuk 11:20. Nave: 5 bays, short columns, carved foliage- with-motifs block capitals, eg Crown of Thorns, Symbols of Passion, Sacred Heart pierced by Cross. Low round arcade with labels and shield stops in spandrels, eg Dove with olive branch. Row of Catholic martyrs' portraits below clerestorey windows. Roof with coving and pointed barrel vault over in 40 panels. Stencil decoration. Pointed sanctuary arch carried down on octagonal columns with Byzantine-style block capitals. Sanctuary with columns and capitals set as an octagon-in-square. Pointed arches over carry walling, pandentives, heavy cornice and circular elliptical dome with stencil decoration in the crown. East wall, stencil decoration, gilded figure of Virgin, independently lit. Fittings: Font in south west baptistery chapel, round bowl carved with quatrefoils on an octagonal stem. North west chapel with crucifix and Our Lady of Sorrows. North and south aisle chapels with stone altars carved in shallow relief. North chapel with half octagonal lit dome. Gilded figure of Christ (Sacred Heart) in alcove. Wooden altar from old chapel c 1800 with "Altare Privilegiatum" and "Hic jacet corpus S. Mecius martyris". Old chapel with former sanctuary at south end. Segmental ceiling. Wall paintings throughout with Apostles, scenes from The Life of Christ, etc. Sculptors for 1874 church, Thomas Gadsby (Dorchester) and Charles Weld.
