Description

1. 5191 EAST STREET (South Side) No 34 (The Bull Hotel) SY 4692 1/54 II GV 2. C17, since a man was killed here during Monmouth's Rebellion. But most external evidence appears to be C18, and the street front was completely re-cased in mid C19. This is stucco. 3 storeys. Moulded eaves cornice on brackets. Blocking course. Moulded strings and continuous sill bands to 1st and 2nd floors. Rusticated ground floor. Moulded panels between windows on 1st floor, and vermiculated panels between strings and sill bands. 6 ranges of sashes. 2 2-storey canted bays. Elliptical arch to yard entry. Doorway with Tuscan pilasters and entablature. Rear of main range is slate-hung, 1 tripartite flush-framed sash with glazing bars. 1 attic dormer with casements. 2 ventilation grilles to cellars with vine leaf pattern in cast iron. 2 long extensions to rear. The east one is 3-storeyed, of which the upper 2 are jettied: 4 ranges of cased flush-framed sashes with glazing bars. Further south are more coursed rubble and brick extensions which culminate in a block with a hipped slate roof, segment headed passageway through, an external brick stair to rear with stone treads, and a clock in the front. The west extension has a lamp on a cast iron bracket in the front part. Further south are 2 storey colour washed brick stables; pitched slate roof; 4 planked stable doors: 1 planked double door; 2 planked loft doors; 8 slatted openings for ventilation. Nos 8 to 36 (even) form a group with the United Reformed and Methodist Church. Listing NGR: SY4672792885
