Description
HIGH WEST STREET 1. 5191 (North Side) Nos 65 and 65A ST 6990 7/84 8.5.50. II GV 2. The front part of this house was at one time the George Inn, dating from about 1600. Internally a stone fireplace of this date remains on the 1st floor and part of another, also a stop-chamfered oak doorframe with some panelling above. The building was of stone, but was extended at the back and faced with brick in the C18. The present front is 2 storeys, 4 windows, of red brick with rubbed brick voussoirs to 1st floor. Wood cornice. Parapet. With the exception of the ground floor shops the building is part of the Dorset County Museum. Nos 48 to 65A (consec)including the Shire Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Museum, St. Peter's Church and monument to William Barnes in churchyard immediately south of West Tower form a group.
