Listed Building: CHESELBOURNE MANOR (106225)

CHESELBOURNE ST 70 SE 2/37 Cheselbourne Manor 26.1.56 - II Manor house in grounds. Mid C16 origin, much remodelled to south elevation, and with a late C19 addition to the north. Knapped flint walls with squared rubble bonding courses. Roofs have been reduced to a low pitch and have C20 slates, parallel ridges. Brick stacks at left and right on ridge with dogtooth cornices. Two storeys 3 windows, regular fenestration, ground floor has 3-light mullions chamfered and transomed (C19 insertions). First floor mullions of 3:2:3 lights, returned labels over and stone cills. C20 metal casements. Porch at centre has a doorway with chamfered jambs and depressed-arch head, moulded cornice over and flat parapet. Plank and muntin door with moulded weatherboard. Inner door is panelled and with 2 upper lights, C19. At right side, front range has a gabled 1½ storey wing projecting south; this gable end has mullion windows of 5 and 3 lights, with depressed-arch heads and separate returned labels over. C20 metal casements. North range, parallel to south core of house, added mid C19. Knapped flint with stone bonding courses and brick dressings. Stacks on right gable, and left of centre on ridge. Two storeys. 4 windows, sashes with thin glazing bars and tripartite sashes to right of centre, French window left ground, and rear door left centres. Stables attached at left end of house, plain and knapped flints. Slate roof. Single storey. To south, 2 windows, both 5-light hollow chamfered stone mullions with separate returned labels. Iron casements. Right of this doorway with depressed-arch head and moulded cornice over. Plank and muntin door, C19. Two-light mullion window over, with label. To north (rear) elevation, stable entrances. 2 plank doors with segmental heads; fixed 2- and 3-light windows. Interior of house: the stair bay contains an original stone vice with a round newel rising from a chamfered base. The ground floor entrance to the vice is a mid C16 stone doorway with a restored 4-centred head in a square surround with carved spandrels. The moulded jambs have hollow-chamfered plinths and spur stops. A ground floor fireplace, now rebuilt, retains traces of original painted decoration in red and black.
