1/209 St Andrews Church 5.9.60 - II*
Church. 1848, in Decorated Gothic style by R C Carpenter. Sacristy added 1886. The whole on a fresh site. Nave, north and south aisles, crossing tower and spire, north and south transepts, chancel. Flint rubble walls with Caen stone dressings and copings. Slate roof. Stone broach spire. Internal core of walls, brick. South elevation: pointed windows of 2 lights with Y-tracery heads trefoil-ogeed and quatrefoil over . Hood moulds with good head stops. Diagonal buttresses. South doorway with 2-centred head and stilted segmental-pointed rere-arch. Nook shafts, moulded with plain round capitals. South porch, Victorian, of 2 bays with benches. Wooden with ogee- headed lights above the dado. Central Tower, of 3 stages with north east spiral stair of octagonal form. Bottom 2 stages: windows with small trefoil heads. Bell-stage: 2 light windows with reticulated head. 2 orders of responds with keeled mouldings. Label and head-stops. Broach spire: octagonal with small 2 light window above, the ball-flower cornice. Chancel of 2 bays with 2 windows (curvilinear tracery). Sacristy to north east: pitched roof and chimney. Heavy quatrefoil plate and 4 roundels. 2-centred door with label. Interior: chancel. East window of 3-light cusped Geometric design with nook-shafts carrying rere-arch, hood-mould and head-stops. 2 bay chancel, with sanctuary window responds, carried to ground level. Pointed barrel-vault ceiling in 30 compartments, painted with sprays of stars. Crossing with pointed-arches taller to east and west and half-octagonal responds. Flat wooden roof divided into 9 compartments, carried on stone corbels. Small north and south transepts, under pentice roofs. Victorian fittings: rood screen, painted wood with ogee-headed central arch and 4 side-arches. Open- work brass gates, jewelled. Wood sculpture over rood with Christ crucified, SS Mary and John and 4 attendant angels. Pulpit: C19, hexagonal, panelled oak with carved figures. Stone and marbled trumpet-ribbed base terminating in paterae. Brass desk and 2 candlesticks. Font: C19, Octagonal stone bowl with cinquefoil panels. Lower hollow with ball flower motif. Octagonal stone stem with spurs. Brass eagle lectern. Stained glass: 5 excellent windows by Powell's, c 1875. New Testament windows. North and south aisles: figures of apostles. Sanctuary furniture of large and small brass candle- sticks. One altar crucifix. 2 brass vases. 2 service books. Sacristy: some C17 enriched framing turned front legs and modern arms.
