Description

ST 81 SE STOURPAINE ASH 4/163 Lazerton Farmhouse 14-7-55 II Farmhouse, C17 with C19 western additions. Main range of ashlar with rubber side-walls. Western ranges of rubble, flint and brick. Main range has slated roof with stone copings and kneelers and end brick stacks. Original plan appears to have been of 2 rooms separated by a central cross-passage with rear stair tower. Main facade symmetrical, of 2 storeys, 5 ground floor bays and 3 upper floor bays. Ground floor has 4-light, hollow chamfered stone-mullioned windows with returned labels, that to the left being blocked. Above are 2 similar 4-light windows flanking a central 2-light window with a stone apron. Windows contain wrought-iron casements with leaded-lights. Central flat wooden porch on stone Ionic columns, probably an C18 addition. 4-panel door. Rear ranges have mainly C20 metal casements. Internal features (from RCHM): Various rooms have panelled dadoes and moulded cornices. Some original doorways and fireplaces. Stair tower has original newel-post with inserted C18 stairs having turned balusters and moulded handrail. Main fireplaces are on western lateral wall, an unusual position in relation to the gable stacks. (RCHM, Dorset, vol. III, p.261, no. 2. Newman, J and Pevsner, N.
