Listed Building: HENBURY HALL AND HENBURY HOUSE (107674)

STURMINSTER MARSHALL SY 99 NE 10/47 Henbury House 18.3.55 and Henbury Hall - II* Country mansion, linked to a stable block; to be converted to many residential units. Early and late C18, mid C19 extensions and alterations. Walls of brickwork in Flemish bond, rubbed flat arches, stone cills and stone dressings to the front (quoins, Diocletian window frame and porch); stables of Flemish and English bonds, with cambered openings. Hipped tile roof, with moulded eaves cornice to the front, brick dentil eaves to the stables. Symmetrical north west front of two storeys, basement, and attic, with Victorian half-octagonal wings extending (set back) at each end, 1:1:1:1:1 windows, the slightly projecting centrepiece has a pediment, with an oval device (of stucco), with rustic quoins at each side and at the ends of the main block; the basement openings are cambered. Sashes in reveals. The porch, raised on a brick base, has a Tuscan Order of two columns and two pilasters, and at each side there is a curving flight of eight steps, with iron rails; the door is half-glazed beneath a fixed light. The rear elevation once comprised wings projecting from the sides of the main block, but the (narrow) middle space is now filled (C19) with a deep window above a glazed porch, which leads onto a paved terrace (with flanking iron rails) and to a stairway. Symmetrical elevation of two storeys, basement, and attic 1:1:1 (2 at the 1st floor wings) windows, those of the ground floor of triple lights beneath blind arches with plastered tympana. Attached to the east end of the building is a 3-storeyed wing of the mid C19, with Gothic oriels to the 1st floor at each end; from its east corner there is a link to the stable block. This is a two storeyed building with irregular vernacular features. The chief interior feature is the original staircase. RCHM Listing NGR: SY9567598223
