6/157 The Old School
GV II
Former school, now private house. Built c1850 for the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. Brick walls, tiled roof with bands of fish-scale tiling and moulded bargeboards. One brick stack left of centre. Single storey. At each end a gabled porch with C20 panelled door. 3 casements with glazing bars under depressed 4 centred arches. At right end, an extension with brick walls and similar tiled roof, has lancet windows; - this apparently used for worship before the Parish Church (qv) was built. Rear wing, - former classrooms of similar construction. Of local historic interest as one of Lord Shaftesbury's village schools - similar to the one at Hinton Martell (qv).
