Listed Building: FURZEMAN'S HOUSE (109303)

CORFE CASTLE WEST STREET (East side) SY 95 81 8/151 No. 51 (Furzeman's House) (formerly listed as Old Cottage) 20.11.59 GV II* Detached house. Late medieval origin, of open-hall form. Altered c1600 by insertion of chimneys and upper floors. Rubble stone walls, stone slate roofs with coped gables; stone end stacks and one right of door. 3 room and cross-passage plan. 2 storeys. Gabled porch. Inner oak ledged door of c1600 in 4-centred arched opening. Ground floor has 3 stone mullioned windows with lead lights and hoodmoulds (one a restoration) and one small casement with glazing bars. First floor has 2 stone mullioned windows with lead lights, one casement with centre horizontal bar and one C20 casement. C20 lean-to at left end with artificial stone slate roof and ledged door. Internally, parlour, at right end, has large open fireplace With stone 4-centred arch. Deep chamfered and stopped ceiling beams. c1600 oak panelled partition between parlour and hall. Hall has large open fireplace, with stone 4-centred arch, backing on to cross-passage, and deep chamfered ceiling beams. 4-centred arched doorway from hall to cross-passage. Original kitchen, left of passage, has large open fireplace with stone 4-centred arch, part built up, and chamfered ceiling beam. Timber-framed partition on first floor, with 4-centred arched doorway. Room over hall has stone fireplace with 4-centred arch. Roof of jointed cruck construction. Central truss of original 2-bay hall has curved struts - this just south of the inserted central chimney stack. No evidence of smoke-blackening - hall apparently unheated. (RCHM, Monument 96. Dorset.
