Description

SY 88SW COOMBE KEYNES NORTH LODGES 7/92 LULWORTH CASTLE II * GV GATE LODGES AND GATEWAY. Dated 1785. Walls of ashlar on brick backing. Lodges have C20 concrete roofs. They are of two storeys, triangular in plan with rounded turrets at the angles. Gothic style based on Lulworth Castle. Moulded string course at first floor level; moulded cornice below embattled parapet. Main windows of two lights, each with 4-centred head, contained in square surround. Doorways (in NW walls) also with 4-centred heads. The turrets have loop-lights trefoiled at head and foot. Few internal fittings survive The gateway consists of two narrow openings with segmental heads flanking the main gates (plain wrought iron) hung from rectangular piers with round-headed niches below oval panels bearing weld arms and the date.
