Description

LONGBURTON ST 6412 LONGBURTON VILLAGE 10/95 Spring House GV II Former Open-Hall house, subsequently ceiled, and greatly extended by wing to north. C15, ceiled in late C16. Extended with a north wing at right-angles in C20. Rubble-stone walls. Thatch roof with gable ends and stone gable- copings. Stone stack with cornice at left hand gable, at ridge right of centre, and at right hand gable. 1½ storeys. 3 windows, 3-light wood casements with a horizontal glazing-bar, renewed C20. Two large 3-light eyebrow dormers, C20. Front door, left of centre, plank and muntin with wood lintel over, C20. Interior: 3-unit plan, lower end (former byre), cross-passage, hall, inner room. Open fireplace inserted in left hand end, c.C16. Open fireplace backing on to cross-passage, inserted C16. 3 jointed-cruck trusses with cruck-post surviving in lower end room. 3 sets of through-purlins with wind-bracing surviving in the lower two tiers. Plank-and-muntin partition on west-side of cross-passage. Mid-chamfered ceiling-beams in ground floor rooms. North range, C20. Rendered walls. Clay-tile roof with gable-end. 2 brick stacks on ridge. 2-light wood casements with glazing-bars. C20 door. (RCHM. Dorset I, p.62(5). Survey and notes in Dorset County Council, Planning Department.)
