Description

STINSFORD SY 79 SW STINSFORD HOUSE 8/153 Stinsford House 26.1.56 GV II Country house, last used as school. C17 origin, part reconstructed above basement c1828 (building accounts in Dorset County Record Office) following fire damage (Pevsner). Rubble and rough ashlar walls - upper walls part plastered, part ashlar. Slate roof, with moulded parapets, and some coped gables. Brick stacks at rear of main west range; ashlar stacks along ridge of south range. Main building of L-shaped plan. Lower L-shaped range at rear (east), with part stone slate roof, partly enclosing a rear courtyard. One storey, over basement with attics. On the main (west) entrance front, the south range projects as a long wing at right end. At left end, a slightly projecting cross wing in rubble stone. This has one sash with glazing bars, under brick segmental arch, on ground floor and attic. In main range, central ashlar porch approached by stone steps, has moulded round arched opening with carved keystone. Roman Doric pilasters as imposts. Roman Doric angle pilasters supporting entablature with metope frieze and cornice. Panelled inner door. On each side of porch 3 sashes with glazing bars. On right side only, 3 stone mullioned windows in basement. Attic has 3 pedimented dormers with remains of lead lights. On south front, lower walls of rough ashlar, with stone mullioned windows. Upper walls plastered, with sashes with glazing bars. One gabled dormer in attic. At right end, the lower east wing, has stone mullioned windows in basement. In upper floor, 2 pointed arched windows with Gothic style glazing, and one similar blocked window. In rear of this wing, stone mullioned windows on both floors. In rear courtyard, several C19 and C20 additions, one with re-used C17 arch. Internally, in basement of north wing, 2 round arched openings, with carved keystones and imposts. In east wing, 2 large fireplaces, one with timber lintel, one with stone arch. Main ground floor room in north wing has raised panelling, and moulded fireplace surrounds. In south wing, bolection moulded panelling and deep cornice. Carved C18 fireplace surround. Several raised panel doors. (RCHM Monument 3.
