EDO11 - Bowl barrow, Long Crichel (Piggott 2); excavation 1938

This barrow was excavated in 1938 by S and C M Piggott who found that the ditch around the low mound was interrupted by a causeway on the north-east side. Under the centre of the mound was an unassociated cremation. An earlier structural phase, also under the mound, was represented by a circular palisade trench enclosing an area about 7 ft. across, with a causeway on the east. Another cremation, perhaps the primary burial was at the centre. No objects were associated with the burials, but a fragment of collared urn was found in the composition of the mound.
