Description

Archaeological observations during laying of a replacement water main during February and March 1998. Monintoring entailed close observation of topsoil and subsoil stripping. Only limited evidence of archaeological activity was encountered, comprising three sub-surface features in Plot 4; one was interpreted as a possible negative lynchet and the others as being probably of natural origin. Small quantities of pottery, worked flint and animal bone were recovered from topsoil in all plots and from subsoil layers in Plot 1, but there were no significant concentrations of artefacts or features suggesting extensive archaeological activity associated with extant monuments.
