Description
Discoveries made during building of a new housing estate were investigated by R A H Farrar and Mr Stevens Cox. Mr J G Hurst, Assistant Inspector of Ancient Monuments, observed some of the building work in progress and his notes were subsequently published by Mr Farrar. To the north end of the field was a scatter of Roman and medieval pottery but no sign of associated structures; Hurst considered that it might have been dumped here from elsewhere. Nearer to the road a small hollow was visible. When foundations were dug this area proved to be waterlogged, revealing a series of stakes and remains of interlaced wattles and, beneath this a layer of stones. This feature was tentatively interpreted as a pond with a wattle and stake surround of possible medieval date. In the south-east corner of the site was a platform, one of a series of similar platforms in several of the fields eastwards towards Uploders, and thought most likely to be medieval house platforms.
