Description

Observations and recording during topsoil stripping on part of the route of the Durweston to Bryanston Pipeline. The work was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology, commissioned by Wessex Water. Archaeological monitoring was required from the south of Durweston, east of Knighton House (ST 8615 0820) to the north edge of Hanging Plantation (ST 8635 0755), altogether 0.67 km. Each plot was monitored during and after topsoil stripping, which was done using a tracked excavator using a toothless bucket within an easement approximately 10 metres wide. No archaeological features were observed during or after stripping, or subsequent limited observation of trenching. A small collection of struck flint and unworked burnt flint, likely to be of Neolithic or Bronze Age date, was noted (Plot 1) but not collected or retained. Earthwork survey was also carried out.
