Description

Southern Archaeological Services carried out an archaeological evaluation of the disused Pinhorn Nursery site, in advance of housing development in July 1994. Three trial trenches 11m by 1.5m were excavated by machine. No significant archaeological deposits or features were revealed. The remains of the former building on the site was found in Trench 1 and this had destroyed any earlier archaeological deposits. Trench 2 revealed the remains of a modern calf burial and a sewer. Trench 3 contained most of the local pottery assemblage, stratified in deposits below the modern topsoil. 116 sherds of pottery were recovered, primarily Verwood of eighteenth and nineteenth century date, including a significant proportion of wasters.
