Description

East Dorset Antiquarian Society undertook excavations in January and April 1989 in advance of renovation work in the northern part of the nave of All Saints Church, Chalbury. The pews and a brick floor beneath were removed and the area beneath excavated. This revealed a polished Purbeck Marble grave slab dedicated to Jane Arney, obiit 1670, the remains of a medieval bell-founding pit and a series of features and deposits associated with the church and a 12th century predecessor. The excavation also indicated that the present nave was constructed in the 14th or 15th century. (1)
