Description

During September 1977 members of Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group carried out an exploratory excavation prior to a proposed extension to the rear of the Shaftesbury Museum on Gold Hill, permission having been given by the Shaftesbury Historical Society. The SDAG report describes the excavation as having revealed a point 3 metres south of St Peter's church and 1.5 metres east of the museum, and at a depth of 75cm. A section of sandstone arch springing was exposed at a depth of between 1 metre and 1.5 metres. The excavation did not go any deeper for safety reasons.
