Description

Members of the Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group carried out a small excavation on the site of a demolished shed. The floor area of the shed was approximately 8ft by 8ft. The trench was excavated to a depth of 7ft [1]. 'The dark surface soil was 3ft deep and contained 17th-19th century material, including a number of clay pipes with maker's marks. Beneath this was a light brown sandy soil, much stone and 15th century pottery overlay a greensand stone foundation.' [2]
