Description
The Roman Wall on Albert Road, Dorchester was uncovered on 28th May 1879 under the direction of Cunnington.
Forty-eight feet of this wall was destroyed when the present house and stables were built about 1839. At this time an interesting 'egg spoon' was discovered at the place by the late Mr. Boswell, who built the house. It was suggested by Cunnington that the spoon had been used in extracting periwinkles and snails from the shells [1].
The wall was exposed to depths of between 7 and 10 feet below the surface in 1879 ,on either side, showing foundations in solid chalk. On the inside of the wall a ledge of about 3 feet wide was found with much worn paving stones upon it. The wall was railed in and the holes backfilled [2].
