Description

Trench A was one of four trial trenches excavated by Wessex Archaeology in late January 1987, to assess the archaeological stratigraphy between the scheduled area of the Roman Bath house and Icen Way, prior to the development of the site for a Day Care Centre. Trench A was situated adjacent to No. 46 Icen way in the NE corner of the site. Below the top 0.35m of car park make-up lay the remains of a 19th century wall and modern rubble to a depth of 0.7m. Below the rubble lay a 0.6m thick soil layer above a dry laid N-S aligned flint and limestone wall. Further rubble and soil layers continued to a depth of 2.25m at which point the excavation stopped. Augering revealed that a dark brown silty loam continued for a further 1.4m to the top of natural Chalk.
