Description

The archaeological field evaluation to the rear of the Alington Dairy, 33 Glyde Path Road, Dorchester was carried out by AC archaeology during late April 1998, in advance of a proposed residential development. Two trenches were excavated, both revealing evidence for archaeological activity of the Romano-British period, sealed by a deep post-medieval soil deposit. Trench 1 (located against the northern boundary of the site) was oriented E-W and measured 2m x 1m in plan. A probable chalk floor was identified above a Roman opus signinum surface lying at a depth of c.1.5m below ground level. These features probably represent elements of a domestic building of late-2nd to 3rd century AD date.
