Description
In March 1997 Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological field evaluation of three fields between the Bridport Road and Poundbury Road, Dorchester, proposed for development. Forty machine-excavated trenches, plus additional contingency trenches, were investigated.
Trench 32 measured 30m by 1.6m and was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2m. It was aligned N-S, close to the northernboundary of the site. It contained two ditches on different alignments. One (2.1m wide, 0.8m deep) may be the continuation of an E-W aligned ditch observed in the northern part of Trench 31. Its upper fill contained most of a Middle Bronze Age bucket urn with applied bosses. The second ditch (1m wide, 0.6m deep, located in the north of the trench), was aligned NNE-SSW and contained Late Bronze Age pottery.
