Description

"About 1725 was found, three or four feet deep, in a garden in the back lane, parallel to the south street, a large mosaic pavement, or opus tessellatum" (1) A drawing of this mosaic is in Hutchins opposite p692 (1). The location of Mr Templeman's garden is shown on the map in Hutchins (2). The location of this mosaic is likely to now be under the rear of Marks and Spencer's at 48 South Street.
