Description
The construction of an access road between Dorchester's new South Station development and Weymouth Avenue uncovered three linear features after the removal of the overburden from the site.
A 1.5m wide ditch, filled with light grey-brown silty loam was seen running parallel with Weymouth Avenue, some 7.0m to the east, and was probably a flanking ditch to the Roman Road to Radipole, which follows the line of the present Weymouth Avenue.
Sixty metres further east, two parallel ditches aligned NE-SW and spaced three metres apart. These ditches were not investigated and no dating evidence was recovered but their red-brown clay fills and their alignment on Maumbury Rings may indicate a prehistoric date, but perhaps a Civil War date is more likely and these ditches form part of the 'covered way' that leads from Maumbury to Dorchester.
