Description

In September 2005 Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of land proposed for redevelopment at the rear of Dorchester Post Office, 43 South Street, Dorchester. Trench 3 lay within the building at the SW corner of the site in the angle between New Street and Trinity Street. It measured 2m x 1m, and was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.18m. A single E-W aligned, vertical sided feature was recorded on the southern side of the trench, filled by alternating bands of chalk and flint containing some sherds of Roman amphorae. The fill suggests deliberate backfilling during the Romano-British period of iether a quarry pit or robbed out wall footing.
