Description
Terrain Archaeology undertook archaeological observations on behalf of Wessex Water during sewerage system improvements outside 16 High Street, Fordington, Dorchester in February 2002. This is close to the area where a fine mosaic floor was uncovered in the earlier part of the 20th century (RCHME, 1970, 569).
The groundworks reached a depth of 2m and chalk bedrock was exposed in one area of the trench. The area was partly disturbed by modern services , but to the north, were a series of layers of fill and chalk rubble to a depth of about 1.8m, but these were probably all post-medieval or modern in date.
