Description

A watching brief was maintained by Wessex Archaeology during the cutting of service trenches and road widening along the new line of Acland Road and across the centre of Old Market Car Park. The work was carried out between November 1984 and August 1985. A series of 23 observations were made and there was much disturbance from post-medieval buildings, but some Roman stratigraphy and later urban soils were recorded. The rear of the Roman town defensive rampart was observed and immediately to the north, of the line of the rampart was a large ditch of possible Roman or pre-Roman date.
