Description
Two trial trenches (FR12N, FR12S) were excavated by Wessex Archaeology as part of the evaluation of the course of the Southern Dorchester By-pass in 1987, in the area just north of Maiden Castle Road (1). These trenches were excavated to target a dense complex of soilmarks and followed on from a geophysical survey of this area (2).
Trench FR12N lay within an area of dense soilmarks and a large number of features were exposed.
Trench FR12S lay to the southeast of FR12N, just north of Maiden Castle Road. No archaeological features were discovered, only a series of ploughscores in the top of the natural chalk.
