Description
Observations by Christopher Sparey Green in an electricity cable trench dug outside the printing works (SY 69319065), in 1965, recorded a layer of clean compact yellow sandy gravel at a depth of 1 ft. below the pavement.
It was covered by grey-black soil but the trench was not deep enough to expose any layers sealed beneath it. It is of some interest since it lies on the line of an E-W street, forming part of the grid street plan of the Roman town, found in 1963 at the children’s ward of the County Hospital, W. of Somerleigh Road.
