Description
Miss P A M Keef made some archaeological observations in December 1947 before the restoration of the inner rampart which had been scarped in 1940 to create a more effective tank obstacle.
She recovered a sherd of Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age pottery and a sherd of Early Bronze Age pottery from the upper fill of a ditch running beneath the ramparts of Poundbury Camp in 1947.
This ditch, and another adjacent and parallel to it, ran approximately N-S, cut into the chalk and filled with flint and chalk rubble. They were each 3-4ft wide and 3ft deep. They had been exposed in 1940 when the outer base of the inner rampart was scarped on the west and south sides of the hill-fort to create a more effective anti-tank obstacle. The observations were made prior to restoration. The ditches lay about two thirds of the way between the current south entrance and the SW corner, and were 20-30 feet apart.
