Description

A 12m by 5m trench to the west of and parallel to the west wall of St Mary's Churchyard was excavated by John Bailey in August 1975. Natural deposits were reached at a depth of 0.6m and no stratified deposits were found. A wide shallow cultivation feature was exposed running across the centre of the site. The overburden was very mixed and contained abraded unglazed medieval pottery, together with post-medieval and modern pottery, a fragment of 14th century AD inlaid tile, a silver penny of probable 14th century date and oyster shell. The agricultural feature contained a large quantity of material including iron slag, coal, clay tobacco pipe, pins, thimbles, buttons, and 19th century pottery. The medieval pottery was probably the result of manuring.
