Description

A cutting was made through the line of the Dorchester Aqueduct as proposed by Major Coates, and through an adjacent cultivation lynchet, in the interests of antiquarian research by H. Colley March and H. B. Middleton during 1902. The position of the cutting was not recorded fully but probably lies close to the eastern shoulder of the re-entrant in a field known as Eweleaze, Quatre Bras, 700m east of Muckleford [1][2]. The aqueduct channel was found 6ft below the surface cut into a levelled chalk terrace. Wroked flint and samian were found during the 1902 season, but it is not clear whether they came from this cutting. HB Middleton suggested that chalky clay debris recovered from the base of the channel contained 'Confervae' indicating that the channel once contained water.
