Description

A single sketch section was made, probably along the northern edge of the churchyard of St Peter's Church, during the demolition and clearance of the houses along the western side of North Square in July 1960. The section indicates a single large vertically-sided pit 9ft (2.74m) wide and 6ft (1.83m) deep cut into the natural chalk about 48ft (14.6m) east of the east side of the Museum. The pit had a single fill and contained a "sherd of flanged bowl + scraps of other pots, oysters, etc." (1) The precise date of this feature is not known. No other details on these observations are known.
