Description

A fragment of coarse Mosaic was found in 1895 against the South wall of Cedar Park, now under Marks and Spencer's store, South Street, Dorchester, during the course of levelling the ground at the back of new houses under construction there [1]. It became necessary to remove a large quantity of earth and the mosaic was revealed at a depth of about 6 feet [2]. The remains measured 8ft by 5ft and ran approximately N-S. They were situated east of building remains and another pavement found during the construction of Marks and Spencer's. The mosaic had a red lattice pattern on a grey background within a border of four alternating red and grey bands. The piece was relaid in the Dorset County Museum without the outermost band [1].
