Description
A deep sewerage trench was excavated along the North side of Fordington High Street during 1892 in order to drain the Noah's Ark Public House, from which it extended some little way beyond the Foundry [1][2].
A layer of grouted flints was observed in this trench, 12-18 inches thick, 5ft below the surface, running for 70 yards under the High Street. It was believed that it represented a Roman road along the line of Holloway road, running from the east gate of Durnovaria towards Fordington Mill where the eponymous ford was belived to have existed [3].
