Description
The borough Surveyor, in opening the the road at the south end of Gallows Hill (now Icen Way) for drainage works, found what he believed to be gateway jambs for a Roman gateway [1].
The position led to suggestions that the eastern walls of Durnovaria where contiguous with Icen Way rather than Salisbury, or that the gateway was set in a recess in the southern walls [3].
Neither of these seem likely, and in the absence of further details about the nature of the supposed gateway foundations it is plausible that the remains were something other than a gateway [1][2].
