Description
Outside the SW corner of the Roman town on the site of the former Great Western Hotel a number of ditches were recorded. These confirmed parts of the section recorded in 1896 (RCHM, 1970, no. 174d) but the infill soils were clayey silts and not black soils as previously recorded. No Roman material was seen on the site and although the ditches had been terraced and the ground levels lowered the implication is that in this part of the circuit the ditches may have been filled at an early date since there was an absence of Roman and later material. the sections recorded confirmed that the outer of the ditches turned NW towards the Borough Gardens before reaching Cornwall Road.
