Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1988, in advance of the redevelopment of the former Grove Garage Site, Top o' Town, Dorchester. Seven trenches were cut by machine across the postulated line of the Roman town defences, but the presence of services prevented a complete section to be cut across the site. Two ditches were located. The westernmost ditch was 5m wide and 2.3m deep with a 'V' profile. One sherd of New Forest indented beaker was recovered from the fill. The second ditch lay 12m to the east on the edge of the site, mostly under the pavement and road. These features probably represent the western and central ditches of the Roman town defences.
