Description

Archaeological observations were made by Wessex Archaeology in 1976 during groundworks immediately behind existing buildings at 51 South Street, Dorchester. A 10m x 7m area was levelled and a 1m wide x 2.5m deep trench was dug around the perimeter. Apart from demolition rubble from a building visible on the 1964 OS 1:2500 map, three possibly medieval pits were recorded along the northern boundary. Also, the natural clay with flints appeared to have survived at the eastern end of the southern trench, below the north west corner of the buildings of 50A South Street.
