Description

During widening of the Road junction between Durngate Street and Charles Street, Dorchester in 1980, C J S Green was able to observe the groundworks. The road widening scheme had been watched by the Central Eexcavation Unit (EDO4565) but Green was fortunate to be able to observe the works at a slightly fuller extent. The observations were made at the location of earlier observations of a Roman building/room by C.J.S. Green in 1964-5 (EDO4379). The structure lay beneath Durngate Street and continued into the grounds of Wollaston House. On the west side a deep area of dark soil and rubble suggested further rooms with a deeper floor surface at this point.
