Description

A field survey was conducted at the site of the pre 1610 gallows, Dorchester by J. Rigg of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 21 August 1954. His field notes are recorded on the OS record card as follows. Just to the west of Icen Way and abutting the north side of the wall, a gallows is shown [on Speed's plan] consisting of two uprights and a cross member. A hundred years after Speed’s plan the gallows was removed from Gallows Hill to Maumbury Rings. It was probably moved about 1700. The area is covered by a modern forecourt and lawn; no trace of antiquity was found. The householders knew nothing about the site. The area is a hill-top (1).
