Description
A site visit was conducted by J. Rigg of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 21 August 1954 at the possible site of the header tank for the Dorchester Roman Aqueduct, discovered during construction of tennis courts at the north end of the Borough Gardens. His site notes are recorded in the OS record card as follows.
The land is still covered by tennis courts and ornamental gardens. No trace of antiquity was found and there were no surface finds.
He also spoke to Col. Drew, curator of the Dorset County Museum who said:
I spoke to a man who saw the depression. It as [sic] about the tennis court in the north part of the Borough gardens where it would be correctly situated for a water head.
