Description

Max Gate House with main front of plumb brick has a symmetrical outline with corner turrets and a central gable topped by a chimney-stack. Designed and built by Thomas Hardy (former architect and novelist) in 1885 who lived here until his death in 1928. Grade 1. The site was surveyed by 'J.G.B' of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 29 November 1979. His field notes are recorded on the NMR monument Report as follows: 'Max Gate' (not Max Gate House) (name confirmed) is as described [above]. (Name amended on MSD). See ground photograph [1].
