Description

Edward Cunnington excavated a number of trenches in Poundbury hillfort in 1880 and 1882 (1). The number and location of his trenches are not known. There was some investigation of the western defences “ between the two valla” where he found only ‘British’ pottery and several flints including some scrapers (1). He also investigated the area “where the valla had been thrown down by the Romans” (1), i.e. on the south or east side, where he found Roman pottery and a Roman spur (1) (2).
