Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation in advance of residential development of land adjacent to Millhams Street, Christchurch, Dorset during June 1999. The site is located on the north side of Christchurch High Street and lies within the defensive circuit of the Saxon burh. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of three trenches. In Trench 1 a single large pit was excavated, containing medieval pottery. Trench 2 contained a clearly defined N-S aligned ditch which could not be dated. A pair of small pits, a narrow gully and a post-hole were identified in the eastern half of the trench, although their fills were indistinct and it was not possible to establish a stratigraphical sequence for these features. In Trench 3 a clay and timber lined feature at the east end contained post-medieval pottery in its upper fill and may be the remains of an earth closet. (1)
