Description

During 1985 the foundations for a link building between Christchurch Priory and the 18th century Priory House were excavated and observed by a watching brief. Unfortunately the results of the work were limited due to 18th century and later disturbance but also curtailed by stone robbing of the Priory walls, the small trench size and the limits of a watching brief. A small section of the Priory cloister block was revealed and consisted of a single course of ashlar rubble and mortar. This was truncated by a large post-medieval soakaway filled with rubble to a depth of 2.9m. A number of christian burials were noted by the contractors and re-interred in a marked spot.
